December in India has its own kind of energy, part celebration, part chaos.

It’s wedding season, holiday season and homecoming season all at once. The days are filled with plans, the nights with parties and somewhere in between there’s a longing for something slower.
That’s what The December Table is for, a pause between sangeet and travel, an evening that feels warm, grounded and real.
A Palette of Warmth
When I think of December, I think contrast, sequins outside, soft linen inside.
For this table, I kept it simple: a neutral base of beige and cream paired with deep maroon napkins and rose gold cutlery. A touch of green down the centre, eucalyptus, curry leaves or mogra adds freshness without fuss.
Textures matter more than colours here: the crease in your tablecloth, the wax running down the candle, the imperfect mix of old and new dinnerware.
Setting the Mood
This table is for smaller evenings, a few friends, a bottle of wine, food that doesn’t demand attention but still feels special.
Keep the lighting low, the playlist easy (maybe Frank Sinatra) and the food comforting:
- Roast chicken or paneer steak
- Big bowl of pasta
- A simple dessert like dark chocolate mousse, chocolate tart or caramel custard for the ones who don’t like chocolate.
The goal isn’t to impress, it’s to exhale.
A Few Details I Love
- Linen napkins tied with soft velvet or a spring of rosemary
- Gold flatware on stone plates
- Small votive candles instead of one centrepiece
- A handwritten name card, even if its just for four
Tiny touches that say I thought of you.
A Season of Stillness
December here is rarely still, weddings, events, guests, travel plans.
But that’s exactly why an evening like this matters. It’s a reminder that you can host without haste. That hospitality can be thoughtful, unhurried and full of meaning.
That’s why The December Table celebrates a slower kind of gathering, in the middle of a fast season.
